A Study in Motion with David Penty & Xin Qiu

2020-04-18 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM

This Workshop will walk the photographic artist through multiple methods of demonstrating motion and the techniques for capturing motion for display on a 2-dimensional medium. Whether the attendee is wishing to capture a child playing soccer, a high speed car passing by, or the motion of torrents of water splashing over rocks, the workshop will provide the opportunity to question, and practice the techniques available for best effect. Examples will be drawn from the experience of 2 advanced photographers who will discuss the impact of object size, lens choice, aperture, focus point, use of flash, panning, viewing location, timing, and shutter speed. Advice will be provided on which technique to use to capture motion but it really comes down to how you want to communicate movement, and how the elements of a good photo (composition, lighting, etc.) work in conjunction with your skillful handling of a given motion capture technique to create a successful photograph.

About David Penty:

I received my first camera at the age of 12. It is still with me – a German Regula rangefinder. Dabbling in photography through University and for the odd rock band that needed an album cover, I enjoyed working in my own darkroom. In 2003, I joined the Mississauga Camera Club and took on Director roles as Secretary, Communications and President.
I enjoy travel and have photographed in multiple continents. I’ve also travelled in every region of Canada. Landscape photography is my primary interest In 2015, I switched to micro 4/3. I’m a certified Drone pilot and that is beginning to be added to my photographic repertoire, for both still and video images.
Over the last few years, I’ve conducted at least 6 workshops, the last two with Xin.

About Xin:

I am a simple man who loves making photographs and spending time with my wife and family. Beyond my job as an Environmental Professional, I am fortunate to be able to spend a good amount of time on personal projects, traveling and collaborating with people for photography. Based in Mississauga Ontario, I’m self-taught with a sincere passion for all things photographic, beautiful light, fresh food, sincere people, and beautiful spaces. I love keeping things simple in life and in my photographic images as I find it always produces the best results with the least stress. I’ve won awards and some images were chose for publication such as the National Geographic Traveler.

Sharpness seems to be the holy grail of photography resulting in either heaps of praise or loads of frustration. Little is known about sharpness beyond the basics and one culprit is always to blame: The Lens. Learn why the lens is only part of a much larger picture (pun intended) and how to control the process and even identify hardware problems on your quest to capture AND process the sharpest images possible. While there isn’t much computer work for this workshop, I will discuss some camera settings and general processing concepts as well as special tools to calibrate camera/lens combinations.

    About Omar:

Omar has been taking pictures for about 15 years beginning with a point and shoot camera.  Later he decided to get some more serious equipment.  After several years and many bodies, lenses, gear etc, he encountered many questions. Being a techie guy by trade and curious by nature, he found out what makes a camera tick. Omar discovered how to uncover the secrets of camera automation and how to control it, and even learn to work without it. Image sharpness plays an important roll.
